Chasing Pine Cones

Harry swims every day in Finland
He is not particularly a good swimmer,
but he jumps into the water and swims very eagerly,
when his master throws pine cones in the lake.
Sometimes Harry has to really hurry up,
because he is not the only one who loves to chase pine cones.
The baby is not so quick in the water, but has better eye-sight.
So Harry's master throws four or five pine cones at a time.
Then Harry can get at least one pine cone in the end.

Hot Summer in Finland

This summer is exceptionally hot in Europe.
So Harry and his family fled away to Finland.
But who has ever imagined, it could be much hotter in Finland
than in Switzerland in the end of July and August!?
Every day over 30°C and on the hottest day around 36°C!!!
Chasing a ball for a couple of minutes can make Harry exhausted.
And when Harry gets really hot and thirsty,
he runs straight under the pier, drinks water from the lake,
and lies down until his body cools down.

Weave Poles

Harry has been practising the weave poles very hard
for the qualifier of ASMV: Agility Schweizer Meisterschaft für Vereine
(The Swiss National Championship for Team Agility) on 19 July.
Harry has no problem in negotiating all the twelve poles,
but he sometimes does not see the first pole and misses it.
So it was worthwhile practising it again and again.
This year, Harry formed a team with Joya and Raja.
Although all the three dogs did their best in the qualifier,
they were not qualified for the final...
Still Harry got a trophy in Jumping,
which made Harry's master very happy and proud.

Therapy Dog

Ever since he became a Sozialhund last year,
he has been visiting a nursery home every monday.
Harry is not very good at staying still on the table,
but he does so any way for the treats from his master's pocket.
All the participants, who can still grab something,
will throw a ball for Harry in the end of each session.
Harry loves this part of the programme very much,
and so do the participants.

Doggie Economy

The lawn by the Old Wall is green and dry again.
Harry goes there every sunny evening to chase his ball.
Harry brings back the ball not only to his master,
but to everyone standing there "at an equal frequency".
Does this mean that dogs have some sort of the sense of Economy?
This is another great mystery to Harry's master...

Who is Walking Who?

The baby loves to walk Harry on leash.
But Harry seems to be thinking that he is the one,
who is walking the baby on leash.
If the baby tries to pull him a bit too far from his master,
Harry simply starts sniffing around and quietly resists to move away.

Season of Ticks

Back in Basel and Spring is here.
Harry enjoys walking in the forest.
Young birds are practising singing,
fawns are sticking their heads from the bush,
and hungry ticks are waiting for dogs to pass by.
In this time of the year, everytime he goes to the forest,
Harry brings back a tick home. But poor ticks...
They will be soon flushed away in the toilet by Harry's master!

Babysitting

In Saas Fee, Harry stayed down in the village,
while his master went off skiing in the mountain.
But Harry was not bored at all.
Because Harry was busy watching over the baby.
Harry seems to be taking the job rather too seriously.
Would it be a little stressful or just simple fun for Harry?

High Altitude Workouts

Harry and his family went skiing in Saas Fee.
It was already in the middle of April.
Down in the village, the snow was almost gone.
Every morning, Harry played with his ball in the backyard.
But because of the very thin air,
Harry got exhausted only after ten minutes of workouts.
And he slept quietly while his master was out for skiing.

Even the Ball...

Harry went Bärlauch picking in a forest.
Just like last year, he was given a ball to play with,
while his family was picking Bärlauch.
But that could keep him quiet not for a long this year.
Harry was constantly dropping the ball at the foot of the baby.
In the end, his master had to leave the baby with Harry
and pick Bärlauch all by herself.
And she made a lot of Bärlauchpesto at home...

Unfortunately dogs cannot eat it, but if you are interested,
please also have a look at How to Make Bärlauchpesto.

Who is Omega?

Harry turned seven years old.
The baby gave harry lots of gentle strokes,
hugs and kisses for his birthday.

"But wait a minute!"
Harry said to himself.

"There is something terribly wrong with this.
For the last ten months, I was thinking
that the baby was the Omega of the family.
But this position looks as if I am the..."

The quiet competition between the seven-year-old dog
and the ten-month-old baby seems to have started.

Fasnacht 2010

The Fasnacht this year was in the end of February.
From the basket of the pushchair,
Harry could see the parade.
Although all he could see was the feet of the people...
But it really did not matter at all.
Because the most important thing to see is
his own master's feet anyway!
The sound of drums and piccolos used to scare Harry to death.
This year, Harry was not afraid of the big music at all.
He could sleep "peacefully" in the basket,
even when noisy brass bands were passing by.

Not familiar with the Fasnacht (Carnival)?

Warning

Grrrr! Grrrrr!! Ghrrrrrrr!!!
Harry is warning something by growling.
Harry's master rushed into the living room,
and found the baby playing with the radiator.
Harry also growls when the baby starts playing
with the rubbish bin and the electric cords,
which Harry himself is not supposed to touch.
However...
Harry does not growl when the baby is playing with books,
in which Harry has no interest whatsoever,
and therefore, he has never been told not to touch them.
Harry simply lies down there by the baby.
After all, books are not as dangerous as radiators,
rubbish bins, or electric cords.

Playing with the Baby

Harry wants to play with the baby.
He brings his rabbit and drops it in front of the baby.
The baby, of course, tries to get the rabbit.
But just before the baby is able to reach it,
Harry snatches the rabbit and skips away.
To Harry's surprise, however,
the baby is learning to move faster and faster each day.
Sometimes the baby is quicker than Harry,
and would not give the rabbit back to Harry for the day.

Basket

Harry used to be carried in a big carry bag.
Now, for Harry's master, the baby is a handful.
So Harry stays in the basket under the pushchair instead.
This way, Harry will be still accompanying his master
pretty much to everywhere she goes!

New Year in Japan 2010

Harry and his family flew to Japan for the New Year.
Harry did not have much to do there.
He was mostly watching over the baby at home.
Yet in the morning and in the evening,
he went for a long walk in the neighbourhood.
There is a large shrine near the house.
Usually, there are not many people in the shrine,
and it is indeed pleasant to walk around there.
But on the first three days of the new year,
there was a flood of people moving towards the shrine.
Some people stopped by to say "Hello!" to Harry.
Harry wished everybody who kindly greeted him
a happy new year with lots of love, laughter and treats!
